The common manifestation is the appearance of one or more spots on the scalp. This is usually caused by an immunity disorder when the intrinsic white cells attack the hair follicles. Alopecia Totalis is another reason for hair loss where all the scalp hair has fallen. When all the body hair is lost it is called Alopecia Universalis, a rare condition.

Genetic reasons: This causes 25% men to be affected by male pattern baldness by age 30. Not just genetic, the male hormone testosterone could also play a role. Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is produced with the conversion of testosterone which either hampers or stops growth and produces weak and short hair. Men not having any testosterone would not suffer from male pattern baldness.
Skin diseases: Skin diseases can affect the scalp and cause hair loss. The particular skin conditions which cause hair loss include: dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, scalp fungus such as ringworm and tinea captis.
Sudden illness or fever: after any serious illness or fever, you could experience large chunks of hair falling out. This is generally a temporary phenomenon.

Hair loss can be treated when you can stop hair fall and promote re-growth. Some ways you could treat hair loss naturally are:
1. Vitamins A, B, C and E are excellent for promoting new hair growth. What is the importance of these vitamins? They not only provide sebum, they also help in increase of blood circulation to the scalp by absorbing more oxygen and collagen.
2. Care for the scalp: It would help a lot if you regularly massage your scalp using herbal oils like olive oil, jojoba oil, amla oil. Some conditions of alopecia areata can be effectively treated with essential oils of thyme, rosemary, lavender and cedar wood.
3. Avoid scalp abuse: Avoid daily use of chemical shampoos and blow drying. Hair and scalp can get severely damaged when you use chemical treatments like coloring as well as straightening. Daily hair wash with hot water depletes hair of natural oil and turn break-prone.
4. Herbal care: Use herbal powders such as amla, shikakai, henna and ritha to shampoo and condition hair. Prevention of graying and hair loss could be achieved if you use amla powder, an effective anti-oxidant and one of the richest sources of natural vitamin C. Also known as the Fruit for hair, shikakai is known for its low pH and can make a great shampoo which cleanses hair without removing any natural oil. Henna then acts as a natural conditioner.
5. Lifestyle changes: This involves doing some stress management by doing exercises and meditation, as stress causes hair loss. Forego Smoking: Because the nicotine from the cigarettes blocks the pathway which supplies blood to the scalp and results in reduced supply of blood. Avoid excessive sun exposure as UV rays can burn and damage the scalp.
